Before
becoming a restaurant in the Forties, The Dog Team Tavern was built and
operated as a teahouse in the Nineteen Twenties and Thirties by Lady Anne
Grenfell, the wife of the famous doctor and missionary, Sir Wilfred Grenfell.
At the "Dog Team Tavern by the River," the Grenfells sold handicrafts from
Labrador and Newfoundland to raise money for the poor and starving population
of those craggy Canadian coastlines.
The advent of World War II brought many changes. In 1946 the Dog Team Tavern
was bought by long time volunteers Eben & Catherine Joy. The Joy's transformed
the mission into an internationally renowned country inn who has hosted the likes
of Robert Frost, Charles Lawton, and First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt.
Most famous of the crafts that give the Dog Team Tavern its unforgettable
ambience are the hand-hooked mats depicting native life in the far North
-- the dog teams, icebergs and polar bears. The walls of the Dog Team Tavern
are still covered with the artwork and relics of a unique chapter in North
American history. The warm, enchanting feeling of folk tales and legends
continues to fill the restaurant and make every visit to the Dog Team Tavern
an unforgettable one.
Take
it all in, as you peruse the mouth-watering menu board. Study a portrait
of Dr. Grenfell or admire the work of artisans past, as you are shown to
a cozy table and offered a spinning wheel full of savory side dishes. The
dining experience at the Dog Team Tavern is more than just that. The food
alone is the most hearty and flavorful of Vermont cuisine. Delectable New
England victuals combined with distinct surroundings make the Dog Team
Tavern a total taste experience -- an unforgettable feast for all your
senses. From their well-renowned prime rib to sizzling swordfish steak,
the Dog Team Tavern offers delicious entrees, accompanied by fresh-from-the-oven
baked breads, friendly service and family-size helpings of home-style vegetables.
But that's not all. Anyone who's ever been there will tell you of the specialty
of the house -- Dog Team Sticky Buns -- offered bountifully and with our
compliments to all with every meal. Savor another house delight -- Maple
Oatmeal Pie -- as you sip that finishing cup of freshly brewed Vermont
coffee or Cappuccino.
